You will never be more disappointed in anything than you would be by having a faulty furnace during the winter time. You will realize that most furnace services will be more expensive during the winter time and finding a technician becomes a daunting task. You can probably save some cash if you do some of the maintenances by yourself and leave the more complicated problems to the technician.
One problem that you may experience with a furnace is inconsistent temperatures. If this is what you are experiencing with your furnace, then you need to take a look at the thermostat. A faulty thermostat will give of wrong readings to the furnace. The thermostat can be replaced with a new one of calibrated.
It is also a common problem to have a low heat output from the furnace. Since most of the furnace use forced air to transfer the heat to the designated rooms, any obstacles in the ducts can lead to low heat output. Make sure that blower system is good condition.
You may realize that the pilot light wont stay on for a long time and thus the furnace wont work as expected. This is mostly a problem with the thermocouple and you need to replace it with a new one. If the thermocouple is not the problem, then you need to take a look at the valve that leads the gas to the pilot light.
To prevent any leaks, plastic tubing should be replaced with copper tubing. This is because the gas can damage the plastic tubing with time thus making it to have some small cracks that can leak the gas. It is also a wise idea to lubricate any moving parts so that you can reduce friction and increase the efficiency of the system
